Tamil Nadu has introduced a new digital system for Driving Licences and Registration Certificates (RCs). From 13 September 2026, physical printing and postal delivery of new RC smart cards will be discontinued under the new system. New vehicle owners can download their Digital RC online after the vehicle registration is completed, instead of waiting for the physical RC card. Key points: • Digital RC can be downloaded online • Free of cost for the first year or until the relevant Tamil Nadu Motor Vehicle Rules are amended, whichever is earlier • Digital RC will contain a QR code for verification • The document will be linked with government digital platforms such as mParivahan and DigiLocker • A clear printout on plain paper or laminated paper can also be used • Government offices should not insist on the old physical smart-card format This new system aims to reduce waiting time, avoid postal delays and make vehicle documents easier to access digitally.
